About CSIRO

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia’s national science agency and one of the world's most respected public research institutions. With a mission to solve the greatest challenges through innovative science and technology, CSIRO operates across a wide range of sectors—from health and agriculture to energy and mining. Founded in 1916, CSIRO’s collaborative model bridges the gap between fundamental research and commercial application. It plays a vital role in fostering innovation through partnerships with industry, government, and academia, both in Australia and globally, enabling scientific advancements that deliver real-world economic and environmental impact.

CSIRO’s Capabilities in Minerals and Mining

CSIRO is a global leader in research and development for the minerals sector, with decades of experience in advancing the science and technology underpinning mining and resource processing. The organisation has pioneered technologies that have become industry standards, ranging from advanced ore characterisation to sustainable processing methods. CSIRO’s Mineral Resources division brings deep expertise in geoscience, metallurgy, sensing, and automation, supporting the sector’s drive for efficiency, safety, and environmental stewardship. Through applied science, pilot-scale testing facilities, and industry collaboration, CSIRO consistently delivers high-impact innovations that enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of mining operations worldwide.

Innovators of Magnetic Resonance (MR) Technology

CSIRO is the original innovator of the Magnetic Resonance (MR) technology now commercialised by NextOre. Starting in the early 2000s, CSIRO scientists developed the MR technique for directly detecting minerals using zero-field magnetic resonance. By 2013, the technology had been scaled to a full-size on-conveyor prototype, which was successfully trialled at Newcrest’s Ridgeway mine in New South Wales. Following these trials, CSIRO established a commercial pathway by spinning the technology out into a standalone venture—NextOre Pty Ltd—in partnership with industry. CSIRO remains a foundational partner in NextOre, continuing to support the advancement and global deployment of MR-based ore sensing systems.
